Medicinal Chemistry Resources for Synthesis

  • e-EROS – Electronic encyclopedia of reagents for organic synthesis
  • Organic Syntheses On-Line – An on-line version of the complete Organic Syntheses series searchable by structure or text.
  • Not Voodoo-Demystifying Synthetic Organic Chemistry Laboratory Technique – tips, how-to advice, etc. for synthetic chemists
  • Protecting Groups – A listing of common protecting groups for a variety of functional groups and their reactivity towards water at various pH values, bases, nucleophiles, electrophiles, reducing agents, and oxidizing agents. In German (but easy to follow: red means highly reactive, yellow – intermediate reactivity, and green – unreactive).
  • Organic Chemistry Portal – lots of useful tools for synthetic organic chemists including synthetic transformations, name reactions, protecting groups, abstracts, chemical suppliers, oxidizing and reducing agents, and a molecular properties calculator that allows the user to predict drug-like properties.
  • Total Synthesis of Natural Products – an extremely useful compilation by Hans Reich listing several hundred total synthesis and organized by target compound name, date, keywords, reagents, and named reactions. References to the original literature are provided.
  • Preparation of organolithium reagents – A extensive listing with references by Hans Reich, University of Wisconsin. A list of common additives (eg. TMEDA) for organolithium reagents is given along with a discussion of when to use each one. He also includes a listing of common amide bases with a description of which base is appropriate for certain situations. An excellent resource!
  • Named Reagents for Organic Synthesis – a listing by Hans Reich.
  • Named Rules and Effects – a listing by Hans Reich.
  • Table of pKa values in DMSO  – organized by functional group. Very extensive.
  • Radiolabeling and Isotope Markers – general information, synthesis of isotopically-substituted compounds, analytical methods, and safety information
  • IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry – Very thorough if you need the answer to a specific question, but not for casual reading.
  • Chemical Acronyms – a listing compiled by Hans Reich.
  • Web Elements – An interactive periodic table of the elements.
  • Chemi-Cool Chemical Dictionary – Look up definitions for chemistry terms..
  • Table of NMR Solvents
  • Amino Acids – Name, abbreviation, and linear structures.
  • University of Wisconsin, Division of Organic Chemistry – lots of resources
  • German-English Dictionary
