The Advising Committee is now known as the Career Opportunities, Mentoring, Professional Advising, & Student Success (COMPASS) Committee.
Our goal is to provide a faculty advisor (now known as faculty navigator) and mentor to each student at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy (EMSOP) to help them make informed academic decisions that reflect personal interests, skills, and professional goals. Students enter EMSOP a variety of ways. This includes as pre-professional students, a transfer from another university without completion of a degree, or those pursuing a second degree after already obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Regardless of history prior to EMSOP, all P1 students are assigned a faculty navigator at the start of their first semester. P1 students are given the opportunity to meet their faculty navigator at the White Coat Ceremony.
Students are encouraged to contact their faculty navigators and to respond to all communications they receive directly from their faculty navigators as well. ncouraged to continue contact with their faculty navigator throughout their professional years as they need.
What is the purpose of a faculty navigator?
- Faculty navigators are meant to serve as mentors to their assigned pharmacy student or students. Faculty navigators can assist with academic planning, career advice, or as a source of information for general questions regarding pharmacy school. Navigators can assist with additional professional responsibilities such as CV review, letter of intent writing, or interview preparation.
- The COMPASS Committee itself is charged with:
- Cultivating a schoolwide culture of student support and fostering advising relationships through a series of standardized and innovative activities that develop students personally and professionally
- Integrating live and online resources to provide students with advising services for personal and professional development
- Working with faculty to foster productive student mentoring
What are the responsibilities and tasks of faculty navigators?
- Each year, faculty will get a new group of P1 advisees
- Requirements include:
- Meeting with P1 advisees in the Fall of their first semester and potentially throughout their pharmacy education for various needs as listed above in the purpose of an advisor
- Attending the Meet and Greet Event prior to the White Coat Ceremony (if possible)
- If unable to attend the Meet and Greet prior to the White Coat Ceremony, other opportunities will be planned for faculty navigator and student meet up
- If the faculty navigator is unable to meet at any of these events, it is up to the faculty navigator and student to set a time to meet in the Fall of P1 year
- Grading various assignments sent via Canvas through LEAP-AHEAD

How do I find my faculty navigator?
- Prior to the P1 White Coat Ceremony, you will receive an with a list of who your faculty navigator will be for your 4 professional years of pharmacy school
- The faculty navigator list will also be posted under the LEAP-AHEAD module in Canvas

How can I engage with my faculty navigator throughout my pharmacy school education?
- How you collaborate with your faculty navigator is up to you! A navigator is assigned to you to be a mentor throughout pharmacy school. They can assist with academic planning, career advice, or as a source of information for general questions you have as you navigate through pharmacy school.
- Navigators can also be helpful for professional advice such as CV review, Letter of Intent writing, or Interview preparation.

What should I do if my faculty navigator is on a leave of absence or leaves EMSOP?

- If your faculty navigator is on a leave of absence and is expected to return, the COMPASS committee will assign you an interim navigator until your assigned faculty navigator returns.
- If your faculty navigator has left EMSOP, the COMPASS committee will assign you a new permanent faculty navigator.
