  • Heartburn Awareness – members will be working with Professor Patel and various Pathmark pharmacies.  Students will help with screening and survey patients with suspected heartburn disease.  3-4 students each month will visit a different pharmacy along with Dr. Patel to participate in this project
  • Operation Immunization – Flu season is coming up, students are asked to educate the community on the importance of receiving vaccinations, especially in high-risk populations.  This project will be done in correlation with SNaPhA (Student national pharmacy association) during the flu season this fall.
  • Patient counseling – Students will participate and help out during the patient counseling competition.  It is a great way to gain early exposure to the proper ways of patient communication.  Winners of the local chapter will have a chance at getting a free trip to the national meeting next March at Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Smoking cessation – November is Smoking Cessation Month.  Involved members will help educate local community or high school on the dangers of smoking and how to quit.  Detailed events will be coordinated by the co-chairs.
  • Stroke day at RWJUH – Students will have a chance at participating in an all-day event under the supervision of Dr. Tomasello.  Students will gain a better understanding of stroke recognition, prevention, and treatment.   They may even get some hands-on experience with blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening, etc.
  • Operation diabetes – APhA is looking to having some new ideas for his project.  One proposed idea is to have a company-sponsored diabetes education day for current pharmacy students.  Further planning is required amongst the committee chairs and members
  • Career fair – This is the largest pharmacy career fair held annually.  It will be on 2/13 9am-3pm at the Busch Student Center.  Over 40 companies in the field of retail, hospital, industry, managed care, and consulting will be present to distribute information to interested students.  It is a great opportunity to network and meet potential employers for future internships and jobs.  There will be ongoing interview throughout the day for students seeking summer internship.  The elected co-chairs will help VP Suzannah in coordinating this event.
  • Fundraiser team – a group of students with great fundraising ideas is needed to help APhA raise money.  All proceeding will benefit members who will be attending the midyear and annual conferences, and all other APhA functions.  APhA welcomes all students to contribute on potential fundraising ideas, it's a great way to develop your planning and coordinating skills.

Other upcoming events include:

  • Midyear Regional Meeting – 11/3-11/5, Richmond VA.  All pharmacy schools within region 2 will come together and bring forth ideas that could be adopted into the APhA adopt in their policy book at the national meeting.  It is a great way to learn about policy development and a wonderful chance to network and meet other pharmacy students.
  • In correspondence with the career fair, we will have someone from career services to come talk about resume/CV writing and interview techniques.  In addition, there will be resume/CV critique sessions to help students prepare for the upcoming career fair.
  • Annual meeting – March 2007, Atlanta Georgia.  Great way to spend quality time with current chapter members and meet others from around the country.  Days of fun-filled and learning activities.  Member reimbursement for the trip will be based on the number of APhA events they attend throughout and chapter funds availability.
  • NJPhA – New Jersey Pharmacist Association, go with our chapter's NJPhA rep to attend monthly meeting involving a gathering of pharmacists.  Listen in on policies that will affect the pharmacy practice.
